News from the Ski Resort
THE PARK - WIDE OPEN
January 8, 2004

Big Bear Lake, Calif., Thursday January 8, 2004 – Bear Mountain Resort (Bear Mountain) and Snow Summit Mountain Resort (Snow Summit) have been the leaders in the evolution of snowboarding from the beginning. The terrain park developments that happen in Big Bear often set the trend, establishing the standard and demonstrating to the industry what is possible. This holds true with this season’s introduction of “The Park” at Bear Mountain, the first resort in the United States to be devoted almost entirely to freestyle terrain and the youth market. Big Bear has played host to many high-profile and professional events over the past fifteen years including the Team Challenge, Nixon Jibfest, Boardaid, X-Games, Vans Triple Crown, Swatch Boardercross, American Snowboard Tour, Forum Young Blood, Volcom PB&RJ, Active Sponsor Me and many more. “It has been incredible to watch the evolution of the terrain parks from the early days at Bear Mountain and Snow Summit to the present. Bear Mountain as “The Park” is like having an event terrain park layout everyday, said Chris “Gunny Gunnarson, Consultant for Big Bear Mountain Resorts.

This season Big Bear Mountain Resorts (BBMR) is proud to introduce “The Park – Wide Open #1” set to take place Monday February 23, 2004 through Tuesday March 2, 2004. “We have a couple of major announcements happening, one is the introduction of “The Park Wide Open” a new industry event (details below) and second is the announcement that we will be bringing a new championship caliber competitive event to Big Bear for the 2004/2005 season (details will be released during the Wide Open.) We believe this is the perfect year, with the introduction of “The Park,” to bring the “Wide Open” event to Bear Mountain and to begin to build a new championship event for the 2004/2005 season,” stated Brent Tregaskis, General Manager for Bear Mountain.

The “Wide Open” is simply an open invitation to the snowboard and freeski industry to come to Bear Mountain sometime over the course of the 9-day event and take part in several fun events and to film and photograph professional and amateur team riders at the nations only All-Mountain Terrain Park. The event will feature one of the most compelling slopestyle courses that will be found at any resort this season. In addition, the Bear Mountain Superpipe will be dialed into world-class form. Next door at Snow Summit, “The Park Westridge” will hold a unique smaller slopestyle course on Ego Trip for night shots and of course, the world-famous Westridge run will be in prime-season form. “The Park” development team will be constructing two brand-new signature jibs that will be placed in “The Scene” at the base of Bear Mountain. The “Wide Open” is just another way to step it up and show the industry what is possible,” offered Gunny.

“The slopestyle and superpipe setup for the “Wide Open” will be at the level of what we built for the Triple Crown last season and “The Park” will be in premier form as usual. The “Wide Open” is going to be like one big party. This event is all about having a good time riding on some amazing terrain, getting some good shots, working on film parts, taking part in some competitive events and winning some great prizes,” stated Chris Winslow, Park Operations Supervisor for Big Bear Mountain Resorts.

The Pro/Am Pipe & Jib Jam

Team managers, reps, box packers, IT geeks, marketing folks, sales managers, secretaries, designers, shelve stockers, snowboard waxers, janitorial staff, editors, writers, web designers, photographers, filmers…everyone in the snowboard and freeski industry are encouraged to team-up with their favorite team professional riders and head to Bear Mountain for the Pro/Am Pipe and Jib Jams taking place during the Wide Open.

BBMR is looking for industry input on the design of two new jibs that will be used in the Pro/Am Jib Jam (please send suggestions to: brad@bearmtn.com).

“We decided to make the “Wide Open” a 9-day event in an effort to give everyone the opportunity to make the trip. We are very aware of the tight schedules and numerous events that are dragging the industry back and forth across the country all season. The plan is to have several fun events including Transworld Industry Day, the Pro/Am Pipe & Jib Jams, the first Snowboarder Magazine World Record Superpipe event, the first annual American Freeski Tour with more to be announced. We also plan to have good live music and parties and we would welcome industry involvement in the entertainment realm. We encourage participating companies to hold autograph sessions and donate product for our daily giveaways to the public. The concept of the “Wide Open” is to bring the industry together for a no-pressure good time and to stoke-out the kids who ride “The Park” everyday. This is also going to be a great opportunity for us to sell our concept for our new championship competitive event that will kick off the “Wide Open” next season. We look forward to showing off what we are capable of creating to potential sponsors of next seasons event,” offered Brad Farmer, Public & Industry Relations Director for Big Bear Mountain Resorts.

What a beautiful day in Big Bear! The sun is shining and the wind has died down. It's in the 40's today and the temps are suppose to go up over the next few days. We are expecting a great week with temps in the high 40's to low 50's. Perfect for a winter trip to the mountains.

The roads are dry if you come up the 18 through Victorville. I went off the mountain yesterday via the 38 and chain restriction were still in force. It wasn't too bad but for a small ways it would have been dangerously icy with a 2 wheel drive without chains. So play it safe. Either come up through the desert / Victorville or be prepared to put on chains.

A storm is definitely moving in! The wind is howling and right now its blowing in a mist of rain. Looking to the west, I can see the storm front approaching and I am pretty sure that as soon as the temperature drops this will be brining snow! The forecast is not predicting a lot of snow out of this though and the next week looks pretty clear. So it will just bring a bit more snow tonight for the resorts and the roads should be ok to travel on the weekend. If in doubt, check our website at Big Bear Live.com and click on Conditions to get the latest weather and road conditions.

Happy New Year everyone!

Well, 2004 is here and with it the holiday traffic for Big Bear. The good news: the roads are mostly dry and the road conditions are good. All roads are open. And the other good news: The ski resorts have made a lot! of new snow so that skiing and snowboarding at both Snow Summit and Bear Mountain, which are now know as "Big Bear Mountain Resorts" is now in full swing and THE place to be. You can check out their websites for conditions at
They say:"Most runs now open at both Bear Mountain and Snow Summit - excellent coverage. mostly machine groomed packed powder surface, plenty of tickets now available...plenty of night session tickets are available at Snow Summit"
My tip: If you want to come to go skiing, then try to come up midweek. You can get better deals for lodging, you have less traffic and no waiting in lines for the ski lift. Doesn't get any better. I'll keep you up to date on the weather as things are happening but in the meantime check out the road conditions & weather here.
