Road Updates
Route 38 from Redlands is open into Big Bear Valley, and there are no chain restrictions on Route 38 or on main roads in Big Bear. According to Caltrans, Route 18 is closed at Big Bear Dam, 18 to Lucerne is closed near the Mitsubishi and power plants and Route 330 is closed from Highland to Live Oak due to rockslides and damaged culverts/settlement. Caltrans says they are working 24 hours a day to reopen closed roads as quickly as possible. Motorists are strongly advised not to pass barricades onto closed roads. This action may cause harm to you and your passengers along with road crews. Road openings can be delayed when motorists drive on unopened roads which results in further deterioration to pavement. This information will be updated when available. Motorists are advised to drive with caution and check road conditions before their trips.
These Slopes Are Worth the Drive (1/13/05 11:15am)
It may surprise some people to know that the recent deluge of rain in the San Bernardino Mountains did not make local slopes unskiable. After Big Bear Mountain Resorts reported that Snow Summit and Bear Mountain still have a base depth of three to four feet with no bare spots, Station Manager Rick Herrick took the above aerial photo of Snow Summit, which indeed shows excellent coverage. Both resorts are reportedly enjoying the deepest base in years and are continuing snowmaking. All lifts and runs will be open this weekend, with surface conditions ranging from hard packed granular to mostly fresh manmade packed powder.

THE RESORTS ARE CLOSED TODAY, BUT PLAN TO RE-OPEN TOMORROW; WEATHER AND CONDITIONS PERMITTING.
Last night we received rain at the resorts. Don't worry! The rain is not washing away all of the snow on the slopes. The deep snow pack acts like a sponge to absorb the rain. The base of our mountain is 7,000 feet with a peak elevation of 8,200 feet at Snow Summit and 8,800 feet at Bear Mountain. This afternoon, snow levels may drop as low as 4,000 feet as temperatures become colder.
